This ambitious ancient-modern mashup shows the spark of the culture war between Italian Renaissance artist and smoldering sensualist Sandro Botticelli, who's in the midst of painting his famed Venus on a half-shell, and the conservative priest who's challenging the relaxed morality of Lorenzo de Medici's Florence. That real-life historical conflict led to the "bonfire of the vanities" -- the burning of "sinful" items like art and books. Inspired by these actual events, Canadian playwright Jordan Tannahill gives Botticelli an apprentice/lover (none other that Leonardo da Vinci), and then traps him between the church and the powerful Medicis, forcing him to make an impossible choice. This American premiere of "Botticelli in the Fire" closes out the Woolly Mammoth Theatre's 38th season. [less-]

Thrilling movement and original music coalesce amidst Shakespeare's poetry to create two worlds in conversation. The Bard's "Pericles, Prince of Tyre" -- like his other late plays -- speaks to the themes of family, redemption, forgiveness and reconciliation. And it's also a lively and buoyant adventure story that touches on experiences both soaring and sordid -- love, sex, friendship, incest, loyalty, betrayal -- as Pericles finds his fate inexorably intertwined with the Mediterranean Sea. "Julius Caesar", likewise, explores timeless ideas of friendship, loyalty and betrayal amidst political upheaval. And it's also a thrilling, cerebral play of intrigue, investigating where personal ambition and the ideals of Rome diverge, as Brutus and Marc Antony make their stands. These productions are presented by ACA Repertory at D.C.'s Shakespeare Theatre Rehearsal Hall. [less-]
